12 Hour Challenge for Charity
Cycling for Life 2019 takes place on Saturday 1 June 2019, 06h00 – 18h00 at the Activity Centre, De Hoop Primary, Somerset West. This is an indoor endurance cycling event. Sponsored teams of cyclists spin on their bikes mounted on trainers, pounding the pedals for 12 hours to raise funds for Helderberg Hospice. Each team member rides for an hour at a time and at the top of the hour the number of kilometres clocked up is recorded onto a data base. High-energy music sets the tone and fuels the pace, backed up by tasty food stalls, drinks and spot prizes throughout the day to boost the cyclists’ staying power.
Many of the cyclists ride because they have been personally touched by the special care of Helderberg Hospice. Some ride in memory of a loved one, others in solidarity with friends or family receiving treatment for cancer.

Liezl van der Merwe, PR and Guest Speaker for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) gave a very informative talk at our weekly meeting.

The NSRI is a charity staffed by almost 1 000 volunteers who respond 24/7/365 to save lives on South African waters. Their efforts do not end there however and Liezl spoke to us about the proactive work the NSRI does in awareness raising, lobbying for effective beach signage and about the WaterWise Yazi Ngamanzi instructors who visit schools in an effort to educate children on water safety.
