Covid-19 Support

Covid19 01

With many weeks of lockdown under our belt, our Club members have comparatively little to complain about.

At the other end of the spectrum, however, we find the people in the townships, many of them without income, no gardens and with little or no opportunity to exercise, let alone adhere to the regulations regarding social distancing. But worst of all, no food on the table, relying on the well-meant intentions of the government to hand out food parcels.

For a period of 6 months the furloughed may receive as little as R 4,200 per month and those in the informal sector R 350 per family member!!! These amounts fall pitifully short of covering the daily needs for sustenance, let alone the monthly costs of services such as water and electricity.

Against this backdrop of poverty, hunger and despair it is heartening to see the number of organisations involved in helping alleviate the plight of the poor.

Literacy project is achieving good results

Details
Published: 28 August 2019

The systemic tests carried out in the schools that form part of District 9 of the Western Cape Department of Education showed some very encouraging results. It turned out that in the field of literacy three of the five primary schools that had made most progress were schools that were supported by the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary club. The school that made most progress (also in the entire Western Cape) was Solomon Qatyana. This school received a special mention as both their literacy and numeracy levels increased by 17.9% and 17.2% respectively. The other schools that showed substantial progress in literacy were Nomzamo Primary and Umnqophiso Primary. The results of the systemic tests in Grade 6 also showed that Danie Ackerman Primary School was among the top performers in terms of growth percentage for literacy as well. These results indicate that our investments have borne fruit. Congratulations to our club and a huge thank you to all our sponsors.

Support Helderberg Hospice Fundraiser - Cycling for Life 2019

Details
Published: 23 April 2019

Bev attended a recent open day at the Helderberg Hospice and now shares with us an opportunity to help the Helderberg Hospice raise funds. Read through this article, download the paperwork and get together a Club team, it can be members or your friends.

12 Hour Challenge for Charity
Cycling for Life 2019 takes place on Saturday 1 June 2019, 06h00 – 18h00 at the Activity Centre, De Hoop Primary, Somerset West. This is an indoor endurance cycling event. Sponsored teams of cyclists spin on their bikes mounted on trainers, pounding the pedals for 12 hours to raise funds for Helderberg Hospice. Each team member rides for an hour at a time and at the top of the hour the number of kilometres clocked up is recorded onto a data base. High-energy music sets the tone and fuels the pace, backed up by tasty food stalls, drinks and spot prizes throughout the day to boost the cyclists’ staying power.
Many of the cyclists ride because they have been personally touched by the special care of Helderberg Hospice. Some ride in memory of a loved one, others in solidarity with friends or family receiving treatment for cancer.
